ABOUT BIO-CLIMATIC DESIGN CENTRAL

This Website tutorial is a part of my master's dissertation "Teaching and Learning Bio-Climatic Analysis : Redefining the Process for the Web". The thesis project grew out of the need for a clear, concise and easy-to-understand way for architectural students/professionals to learn Bio-climatic analysis. There is text available on the topic but one has to consult a few books before and indeed if, it becomes clear. Looking to do bio-climatic analysis on a particular city, I experienced firsthand the confusion amongst conflicting theories and difficulty of the concepts. Compound this by having to track the analysis process through multiple publications, and one begins to appreciate the idea of a centralized set of information on the subject, with the sole aim of teaching the reader how to do bio-climatic analysis.

I chose to present this work on the Web because it will be accessible to many across the globe, and that I can use the inherent qualities of the medium to explain the process of plotting on the charts better than that from a written medium. Also, the tutorial would have the potential to be used for long-distance/ correspondence learning and classroom instruction.

AKNOWLEDGEMENTS
This project has been a process of self-discovery for me and I have quite a number of people to thank for it. Dr. Nader Chalfoun, who is also my chair on the project, was the first to plant seeds of this idea when I was busy storming into his office with one harebrained idea after another, and then a source of intellectual nourishment at the leanest of times. Dr. Kevin Lynch, my meeting of whom has to be one of the most fortuitous happenning for me here in the United States, and who has been like a mentor, colleague and a friend to me with scope way beyond this project which, by the way, would never have developed without his amazing skill of bringing the best out in people. And Prof. Fred Matter - West's answer to the Indian Sage - who would know more than would let on, whose eyes would always see the big picture above all the chaos and whose (seemingly) indifferent attitude towards technology helped me to get a valuable insight as to what's really important.

I would be remiss if I did not mention all my test users - Felicity, Ina, Yousuf, Ritwik, Deepak, Teresa, Clint, Jane, Matthew, Vishwanadhan, Toby, Kevin, Lorena, Greg, Cindy, Tait, Jason, Chris, Steve, Alejandro and Siobhan - who went beyond their call in their discussions, suggestions and time, both here at the program and those half the world away. Add to this Linda Erasmus, our graduate secretary, who I will thank as a representative of all those people I botherd repeatedly and was rewarded only by their kindness and generosity.

Of course, all of this would have no meaning if I did not mention the love, understanding and patience of the light of my life - my wife Tripti, and my parents back in India. Indeed, to say I can even begin to thank them would border on the rude.
